How to Layer Your Skincare

Order matters. The simple rule for layering skincare, from cleanser to sunscreen, so every product can do its job.

Layering is less about how many products you use and more about the order you apply them in. Get the sequence right and each step has the best chance to do its job.

The golden rule: thinnest to thickest

Apply products from the lightest, most watery texture to the richest. Thin, water-based formulas such as serums go on first, onto clean skin. Creams and oils come later, because heavier textures can make it harder for lighter ones to spread evenly beneath them.

Light to rich. Water before oil. Sunscreen last.

A simple order

  1. Cleanse. Start with clean skin. Our Cleansing Foam is massaged gently over the face and rinsed off with water.
  2. Serum. Smooth on a light serum such as our Hydrating Serum.
  3. Moisturiser. Follow with a cream to help keep skin comfortable. In the morning, our Moisturising Day Cream is the final step before sunscreen.
  4. Sunscreen (morning). Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen when your skin will be exposed to daylight.

Small details that help

  • Give each layer a moment. Let a product settle before applying the next so textures don't pill or slide.
  • Use less than you think. A small amount, spread evenly, is usually enough.
  • Introduce one product at a time. It's the easiest way to see how your skin responds.
  • Keep strong actives simple. If you use exfoliating acids or retinoids, follow the product's directions and avoid stacking several strong products at once.

Fewer layers, better results

A well-layered routine doesn't need to be long. Three thoughtful steps, applied in the right order, are a strong foundation for most people.
